(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 3/31/14) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on the Oakland County Republic Party to drop notorious Islamophobe Richard Thompson as a speaker for the group's April 1 meeting.

Thompson, who is President of the Ann Arbor based Thomas More Law Center, has a long track record of fear-mongering about American Muslims and Islam. He has advanced the false claim that the Muslim Brotherhood and sharia have taken over the educational system of the United States military. Thompson claims that the government has "turned over our organizations that are supposed to protect us to the Muslim Brotherhood."

People for the American Way (PFAW) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have both designated representatives of the Thomas More Law Center, including Thompson, as among those promoting racist and xenophobic hate speech relating to Muslims.
"We call on the Oakland County GOP to drop Thompson as a speaker in their upcoming event and for the Michigan GOP to send a clear message to its officers not to provide platforms for anti-Muslim speakers," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
CAIR-MI also recently called on Michigan GOP officials to condemn Michigan Republican National Committeeman Dave Agema for making anti-Muslim comments.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
