(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 10/24/14) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to condemn the most recent racist remark by a state GOP official on social media. Michigan Republic National Committee Dave Agema recently referred to Arabs as "camel jockeys" on his Facebook page.

Earlier this year, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and state GOP Chairman Bobby Schostak both condemned Agema for his bigoted comments. But Governor Snyder has yet to repudiate Agema by name for his efforts to marginalize Arabs, Muslims and immigrants.

"We call on Governor Snyder to condemn Agema's latest racist remarks," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. "As the symbolic leader of the GOP in the state, the governor's failure to condemn Mr. Agema by name for his racist comments gives many in the Arab and Muslim communities the impression that he silently approves the comments."
Walid also mentioned that a series of racist comments coming from members of the GOP nationwide may influence how American Muslims vote in the upcoming midterm election.

Agema latest comment is but one in a long string of bigoted remarks leveled against minorities while serving as a state representative and committeeman of the GOP. He has made several false and inflammatory claims about Muslims and Arab-Americans in Michigan, including that Dearborn is infested with sleeper cells and that Muslims have contributed nothing positive to American society.
