CAIR-MI Supports Censuring of Hamtramck City Council Member for Anti-Immigrant Comments
(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 9/26/2017) — The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today expressed support for the censure of a city council member in Hamtramck, Mich., for recent anti-immigrant comments.
Early this month, Hamtramck Councilman Ian Perrotta blamed immigrant residents for what he deems a trash problem in the town, stating that it was the fault of residents from Yemen and Bangladesh.

Yemen and Bangladesh are two Muslim-majority countries, Yemen being one of the countries on President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban list.
The Hamtramck City Council is scheduled to meet today at 7 p.m. and is expected to discuss and vote on a resolution to censure Perrotta for his anti-immigrant comments.

“We support the censure of Council Member Perrotta for his scapegoating of Yemeni and Bangladeshi immigrants,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “In the Trump era, racist and Islamophobic statements from government officials are becoming all too common. It is important for their peers to clearly rebuke such bigoted rhetoric.”
The Washington-based civil rights organization recently launched an app to share critical ‘know your rights’ information and simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging Muslims to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
