Islamophobia

CAIR-MI combats anti-Muslim discrimination through education, legal advocacy, and community empowerment. We document incidents, file complaints, and work to protect the civil rights of Muslim Americans across Michigan.

What is Islamophobia?

Islamophobia is a form of racism rooted in prejudice, fear, and hostility toward Islam and Muslim communities. It manifests as discrimination, hate crimes, surveillance, profiling, and the systemic exclusion of Muslims from civic and social life.

Unlike simple ignorance, Islamophobia is often fueled by deliberate misinformation campaigns, biased media coverage, and political rhetoric that frames Muslims as inherently foreign, threatening, or incompatible with Western values.

Its effects are far-reaching: Muslim children face bullying in schools, employees encounter workplace discrimination, community institutions receive threats, and individuals are subjected to hate speech and physical violence. Combating Islamophobia requires a coordinated effort of education, legal action, and community solidarity.

How We Fight Back

Education & Outreach

We lead workshops, interfaith dialogues, and media literacy programs to combat stereotypes and build understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim communities across Michigan.

Legal Advocacy

Our legal team provides free consultations, files civil rights complaints, and advocates for policy changes that protect Muslims from discrimination in employment, housing, schools, and public services.

Incident Documentation

We track and document hate crimes, bias incidents, and discriminatory practices to identify patterns, inform advocacy strategies, and publish annual reports on the state of Islamophobia in Michigan.

Report an Incident

If you or someone you know has experienced anti-Muslim discrimination, a hate crime, or workplace/school bias, we are here to help. Every report matters and strengthens our collective fight against Islamophobia.
